The English as a Second Language (ESL) program in McCallums Hill Public School aims to develop ESL students' English language competence and improve their learning outcomes throughout the curriculum to a level where they can fully participate in schooling and independently pursue further education and training.
In 2013 McCallums Hill Public School has a total of 369 students, 75% of which are from language backgrounds other than English (LBOTE). Most of these students require additional support to expand and consolidate their English at an academic level.
There is an ESL New Arrivals Program which provides short term ESL teacher support for eligible newly arrived students.
Other ESL support is provided on the basis of need with the greatest weighting being given to beginning or first phase ESL learners. These students require a lot of assistance in order to access the demands of the school curriculum.
ESL teachers support all ESL students through collaborative planning and programming. Class teachers and ESL teachers cooperate to support the language and learning needs of all ESL students in their class.
The ESL teaching program aims to support students' learning of English so that they are able to communicate with their peers and their teachers, participate in the classroom and have access to equitable learning.
At McCallums Hill we work together collaboratively in team teaching or parallel teaching and in some instances withdrawal to provide explicit language learning support in the context of the curriculum.
